The first part of a ShaderToy live-coding series that lays the groundwork for The Drive Home, a rainy night-traffic shader. It covers basic setup and builds toward rain and bokeh effects.
Why Hacker News points people here: Recommended in shader and rain-simulation threads as an engaging tutorial from a well-liked graphics-programming channel.

Not sure if it is the original but the source where I first saw this rain effect was on ShaderToy - The Drive Home by Martijn Steinrucken aka BigWings[1] The accompanying video tutorial[2] is super interesting too as well as the HN discussion at the time [3]. I've always enjoyed watching The Art of Code[1], Freya[2] also has a good number of videos on it. But that is just vertex shaders for things like Shadertoys. There is much more to computer graphics or GPGPU than this though, Im still learning about that myself X). [1] this video [2] link

Tutorial on the Drive Home rain shader

Is there any description or attribution for the shader? Are the visuals an improved version of Martijn Steinrucken's "Drive Home" shader [1], or a different approach? This one does seem more dynamic with more detail, it looks pretty good, and I like how the big drops take out the small spray. [1] shader: link video: link tutorial: this video
