Bitcoin - Unmasking Satoshi Nakamoto

Barely Sociable presents a case that Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto is cryptographer Adam Back. It uses interview clips and circumstantial evidence, and also touches on the block size dispute.

Why Hacker News points people here: HN commenters recommend it as a compelling, if not definitive, argument for Adam Back as Satoshi whenever the identity question comes up.

I was sure too about Hal Finney until i saw this video [0]. There are a few more references that it is more likely that Adam Back could be Satoshi. [0] this video

Compelling case that Adam Back is Satoshi.

I think the US government would already know who Satoshi is due to bulk email collection via PRISM and stylometry. I don’t know why you think Satoshi broke any US laws. The following video painted quite a compelling story of why Adam Beck is Satoshi: this video

“I'm still convinced its him.”

Part 3 making the case that Adam Back is Satoshi.

Full comment

Don't see anything on HN mentioning Adam Back getting called out as being Satoshi and the massive campaign launched to disprove this. One of the only people who isn't attempting to capitalize on the claim, but who directly benefits from Bitcoin's flaws. In a case of a white knight turning to the dark side. Part 3: this video The conspiracy YouTuber making the claim was attacked and slandered heavily after making the claim despite convincing evidence that wasn't disproven: 1 Same English typing mannerisms 2 Misspelling the same words 3 A conspicuous gap in his career while Bitcoin was being developed 4 entering the bitcoin scene in forums very early acting authoritative Not to mention 5 A history of working on bitcoin-like technologies: "hashcash" 6 early involvement with the cypherpunks I'm still convinced its him.

“Pretty strong arguments as to why Adam Back is Satoshi”

Strong arguments that Adam Back is Satoshi.

Full comment

Surprised that noone mentioned Barely Sociable video on Satoshi Nakamoto[1] (last of a 3-part series). Pretty strong arguments as to why Adam Back is Satoshi, the amount of coincidences is just way too many IMO. Craig Wright is definitely not Satoshi, the guy has some issues and so keeps claiming that he is. [1] this video

“Not definitive but it's a very convincing case.”

Earlier convincing case identifying Satoshi.

Someone already found this years ago: this video I haven't read the full article yet but I'm guessing they didn't give credit, as the New York Times tends to do. Not definitive but it's a very convincing case.

“This video goes into a bit more detail”

More detail on the block size dispute and Blockstream incentives.

Full comment

I think you're missing some context about (what is now called) Bitcoin Cash. Look up the debate between big blockers and small blockers if you're interested in learning more; a quick summary, many people wanted larger block size so bitcoin could process more transactions. I believe several newer core developers staged a coup to prevent this from happening, despite several of the longer-term contributors being in favour of it. The original contributors (sans satoshi, who was mostly inactive at this point), had their access to the git repositories revoked. This video goes into a bit more detail ( this video ) but basically the people opposing a larger blocksize had financial incentives.. a lot were in bed with a company called Blockstream which benefits from their development on sidechains (now the lightning network). Had the block-size been increased, Bitcoin would be much more useful as a means of exchange (more transactions would be processed, and they would be cheaper). This is where Bitcoin Cash is now, but it doesn't get the BTC ticker symbol because Bitfinex and other CEXes have a lot of influence as well.

Interview where Adam Back describes himself, supporting the theory.

honestly, i thought we settled on Adam Back as Satoshi: - adam was extremely active during the early cypherpunk days, when - he invented Hashcash, which bitcoin cites in its whitepaper and used as its PoW - he was the first to take Wei Dai's b-money proposal seriously and discusses combining it with hashcash (the 2 core elements of bitcoin) - he disappeared and reappeared professionally during the exact timeframe of bitcoin development - his writing closely matches satoshi's (british english + style/punctuation) - he had no public involvement with bitcoin until he joined Bitcointalk forums in 2013 and suddenly had intimate details of unknown bugs in bitcoin saying "I thought I'd fixed them". - he started Blockstream with the mission to ensure the survival of bitcoin (funded lighting, paid core devs, etc) - he recently helped nail the coffin on Craig Wright's case in court proving he was not satoshi, during which - he revealed the earliest known email correspondence with satoshi watch the interview were he uncomfortably describes himself link this video

Who invented Bitcoin? Paul LeRoux - "He [Paul LeRoux] also invented E4M the predecessor to Truecrypt, the encryption software NSA still can't crack. E4M was released the same exact way the BTC whitepaper was released. Fun fact: he is from Zimbabwe and was there during the '08 hyperinflation that created the $100 Trillion Dollar Bill, BTC was created the next year." [0] Shinichi Mochizuki - Ted Nelson speculated that Sinichi Mochuzuki is Santoshi. Len Sassaman - "I'm pretty certain Satoshi's identity is known, although not publicly stated and/or confirmed by anyone. I believe a handful of the early developers had very strong suspicion as to who was behind the name, but never pursued a confirmation of it. My money is on Len [1]. The sheer number of coincidences, crossing of rare skill sets and interests, time, place, penchant of pseudo anonymously publishing things and happened to take his own life <2 months after Satoshi's final gloom-filled message, "I’ve moved on to other things and probably won’t be around in the future" [1, 2]. Also, "her [Len's] wife probably has the keys." [3, 4]. Also "Len Sassaman (died 2011)". [5] Nick Szabo - "...if it's one person, it's gotta be Szabo", "Only person in the world who wouldn't cite his work would be himself.", and "If it's more than one person, of course it could include Len. [6] Also, "There is plenty of direct evedence [sic] that points to him [Szabo]." [7] "Here is Szabo last post about Bitgold before he renamed it to Bitcoin: [LIN
