Prof. Thomas Seyfried - 'Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: Implications for Novel Therapies'

194K views · Sep 22, 2020 · 44:30 · 1 HN recommender · 12 mentions · discussed 2020–2023

A lecture by Prof. Thomas Seyfried arguing that cancer is primarily a metabolic disease rather than a genetic one. It covers the Warburg effect, mitochondrial damage and implications for therapies.

Why Hacker News points people here: HN people recommend it for its interesting, if contested, theory of cancer's root cause, noting the content matters more than the delivery.

Sorry to hear your are going through this. Here are a few I have found interesting. I am not a doctor and by no means is any of this something I am suggesting. It's just interesting content on your topic. - Prof. Thomas Seyfried - 'Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: Implications for Novel Therapies' this video - A New Cancer Strategy link - The MOST Important Cancer Prevention link - Antiangiogenic Therapy link - Sulforaphane and Its Effects on Cancer, Mortality, Aging, Brain and Behavior, Heart Disease & More link - Q&A with Dr. Jed Fahey on Sulforaphane, Moringa and Chemoprotection [An authoritative discussion!] link - link Also watch this site if your doctors run out of ideas. Look for newer and more targeted methods. link Some people that were written off by doctors had some success with prolonged fasting. Also important would be to get opinions by many doctors inside and outside of your medial group.

There are some other compensating controls that can mitigate cancer but it takes some willpower which I suppose is an entirely different topic all together. This video [1] is worth a watch to learn a bit more about cancer as a metabolic disease. [1] - this video [video]

As does glucose and L-Glutamine. Cancer cells literally live off of glucose, specific amino acids and fermentable fuels. What is the FDA's stance on banning sugar? I would prefer we focus on eliminating molecules from the diet that feed cancer cells and damage mitochondria. I believe we should also cycle up/down molecules that trigger an up-regulation of NRF2/AMPK to literally digest the senescent and especially the damaged cells prior to them becoming cancerous. I am not really a fan of NR/NMN anyway. Both are more expensive than NAM and my body already converts NAM to NR/NMN, it's just a lot slower than superloading NMN directly, not to mention NMN alone will only activate the Sirt genes but other nutrients are required for repair. Excess NMN is converted back to NAM for storage and when there is too much we just urinate it out. But I am no biologist and the folks pushing these supplements will not respond to my inquiries. On a related note take some time to watch a video on Cancer as a metabolic disease. [1] This doctor is not a great speaker but it is the content that matters. [1] - this video

The idea that people are imagining this, as other commenters have put forward, is nonsense. The idea that people are just getting old and drink too much soda isn’t right either although it’s close. The reason why people report similar or overlapping symptoms is because they all have a problem with their immune systems. Overactive immune systems tend to cause a certain set of symptoms. The immune system is very complicated, very broad in its jurisdiction and very poorly understood. It is scientifically proven that certain chemicals (common food additives for example) cause no immune (allergic) response at all whatsoever, but cause an immune response to other chemicals. So the immune system is not just complex as a monolith but also has inputs that interact with one another, leading to a combinatoric level of complexity. When you also consider that immune function and mediation (as seen with some food additives, for example) is observed in emotional stress — something that is as close to being unquantifiable as anything could be — one can see that it might be the case that this is a disease that has evaded medical science until now. Chronic fatigue syndrome was observed in gulf war vets and was so common among them that it was coined “gulf war syndrome.” One researcher has hypothesized that this is due to an immune response which takes the form of cell deactivation via ATP signaling which he has named “cell danger response.” Meanwhile, it is widely appreciated that autism is no

“ meaning we’ve been wrong about some basic ways in which the brain and immune system are connected.” I’ve been screaming this at my doctors for years. For those who don’t want to read the article, the quote sums it up. They discovered new lymphatic vessels in the brain in 2016 where previously the brain wasn’t thought to have any. 2 years ago I had a stressful life event. I became schizophrenic because of it. I accidentally discovered that ketosis cures the schizophrenia. It turns out a doctor at Harvard has been sounding the alarm about this and nobody is listening to him [1]. After researching these things somewhat deeply, it appears that almost all diseases that involve the death or inactivity of neurons (Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, autism, etc) are sometimes caused by “inflammatory signals,” as I call them, which interfere with the metabolism of glucose. Note the way I worded that — there’s more than one way for those neurons to become deactivated. What we currently think of as being a single disease might be many diseases, many different types of pathology that ultimately lead to the silencing of the same general population of neurons and thereby causing the same symptoms. The point is that the metabolic angle doesn’t explain all neural pathology, so keep that in mind when ketosis is found to only put 20% of schizophrenics into remission in the next five years. There is currently exactly one study looking at the effect of ketosis on schizophrenia, in Finland, and it kee

Speaking of reproducible science, I am really curious what cancer experts take is on this video [1] and their thoughts on cancer not being a somatic genetic disorder but rather that being a downstream effect of a mitochondrial metabolic disorder. [1] - this video

My understanding is that cancer cells short circuit the krebs cycle [1] and survive off fermented fuels like glucose and most of the amino acids, l-glutamine being the most prevalent and available. Most of the population have an over-abundance of glucose. [1] - this video [video][unpopular opinion]

How far along has this technology and science evolved? Have we repaired birth defects in humans yet? Can we use this to make an adult human repair itself in ways otherwise thought not possible yet or perhaps very soon? How many people are working on this? The reason I ask is that despite the video having just been uploaded I recall watching this some time ago. I may have even saved it. How far are we from cracking the bioelectrical code ? Is there a website that is tracking the progress and accepting donations? I would also like to see Michael Levin's views on the work by Prof. Thomas Seyfried on cancer as a metabolic disease [1]. Specifically does Thomas's work reference the mechanical structures that Michael is talking about as an augmentation rather than conflicting concepts? [1] - this video [video][44 mins]
