Tesla crashes into child dummy as auto-break test fails

A short news clip of a test in which a Tesla hits a child-sized dummy while a car equipped with Luminar's lidar stops in time.

Why Hacker News points people here: HN cites it mainly critically, as one of several tests used to question Tesla's collision avoidance compared with lidar systems.

“This is unrelated to the Dawn Project tests which evaluate the ability to avoid child pedestrians without intervention as seen in the videos.”

Cited as a different test about Tesla AEB.

What lidar product are you referring to? The Dawn Project and founder are unaffiliated with any lidar company. Are you perhaps referencing the unrelated test [1] by a unrelated lidar or maybe AEB company that was making the rounds a few months ago? That test was demonstrating the Tesla AEB system and whether it would override the human pressing on the accelerator like the other car. This is unrelated to the Dawn Project tests which evaluate the ability to avoid child pedestrians without intervention as seen in the videos. [1] this video

“Would it have though?”

> It would've still stopped Would it have though? this video At this point I can't imagine buying anything Tesla related. Or anything related to Elon Musk for that matter. He's a grifter who has managed to stand on the shoulders of giants and call himself tall.

Compare Waymo[0] with Tesla [1].. These are easily searchable which leads me to question your sincerity in feinting ignorance. [0] link [1] this video

“And random public tests too”

Full comment

There are many of such tests in the open. There is even a former Tesla AI engineer that throws objects in front of the car on YouTube, as a demonstration. The results are not glorious at all :| (trying to find the channel back if someone knows). And random public tests too: this video This is a basic safety auto-braking. Just feels very wrong to even accept it goes into release.
